Data Description

The Media Analysis portal contains four distinct data sets. These data are described below.

  • Newspaper articles from Maine and New Hampshire publications that cover shellfish issues (raw data available

This data set includes a list of every article published in Maine (from the Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald) and New Hampshire (from the Concord Monitor and Union Leader) from 2003-2014. The information provided within the Excel spreadsheet includes the title, source, date, author of each newspaper article, and the search term used to obtain the article. A summary of analysis procedures and project results is also available. (note: this dataset contains duplicate data).

  • A subset of the newspaper articles that mention the Department of Marine Resources, with a unique GIS-style analysis (raw data available)

This data set was created using the initial newspaper article list described above. Every article in the original sample that mentioned the Department of Marine Resources was compiled for a separate analysis that will be delivered to DMR (n = 183). The information provided within the Excel spreadsheet includes the title, source, data, and author of each newspaper article. In addition, this spreadsheet provides the total word count of the article, the total number of words dedicated to quoting DMR officials, the location discussed within the article (e.g. regions, cities, bays, etc.), the region addressed by the article (Southern, Midcoast, Downeast, or Coastwide Maine), the DMR official(s) mentioned in the article, how DMR is framed (as a regulator, helper, or expert), and how the article frames shellfish as an issue (economic, environmental, public health, political, or cultural). Region, DMR image, and article framing are categorized using 1’s and 0’s. All other data is qualitatively listed. A summary of analysis procedures and project results is also available.

These data are currently being analyzed using GIS analysis to detect spatial patterns in news coverage of shellfish-related issues.

These data include a brief summary of qualitative data that was collected, including the interview questionnaire. This data set cannot be made available in its raw form because the identity of the NEST researchers cannot be adequately protected. Instead, summary graphs and/or statistics are provided.

These data include the results of a survey of NEST researchers (n = 27). This data set cannot be made available in its raw form due to the nature of this survey effort, the identity of the stakeholders cannot be adequately protected. Instead, summary graphs and/or statistics are provided.
